Missouri senior All-American Sarah Shire (Columbia, Mo.) moved into the top-spot in the all-around in the latest GymInfo rankings released Sunday evening. After winning the 21st all-around title of her collegiate career with a 39.550 at No. 13 Illinois on March 13, Shire moved up from second to first in the national rankings. This is the first time in program history that a Missouri gymnast has held the No. 1 ranking.
Shire also ranks in the top-20 on all four events. She is tied for 16th on vault, fifth on bars, fourth on beam and 10th on floor. The all-around score of 39.725 that Shire posted in the Feb. 26 meet against Illinois State still stands as the highest all-around mark posted this season. Shire has won eight all-around titles this season along with 29 event titles.
Shire will look to win her ninth all-around title of the season as she and the rest of the 14th ranked Missouri Tigers take on Centenary College of Louisiana on Sunday, March 21 at 2 p.m. in the Hearnes Center. The meet will mark Senior Day for Shire and three other seniors that have made a monumental impact on the Missouri gymnastics program.

I am very thankful for being given the opportunity to be a division one athlete at Mizzou. Although Columbia is a long way from my home in Houston, Texas, getting to come here has been a great experience. Gymnastics before college is strictly an individual sport; now I am able to compete for something much bigger than myself: my team, my coaches, and my school. I am proud to be a Mizzou tiger!
Athletics has also created new ways that I can become involved in the community; the Total Person Program helps coordinate events where we can visit and speak at local elementary schools, be active at Special Olympics events in Central Missouri, visit children at the hospital on campus, read to children at local schools from a location on campus via video chat, and the list goes on. This has been a huge help for me getting involved. While athletes are busy with their sport and schoolwork, having the Total Person Program organize events for us makes doing community service so much more convenient; I have gotten involved in the community a lot more because of their help.
I am also thankful for the free tutoring we receive. Balancing class work and practice can be challenging, and this service provided to us has been a huge help! Having a nice computer lab and many individual quiet study rooms in the Sheldon Academic Resource Center provides us with a good place to meet with tutors or study when needed.
Overall, I am just lucky to be here and thankful for being given this great opportunity to be an athlete at Mizzou. GO TIGERS!

My # 1 favorite movie is Rudy. I first saw Rudy when I was about 10 years old when a former teammate let me borrow it. I was immediately inspired by Rudy's work ethic and persistence. That movie taught me at a very young age that if you put your mind to something and work as hard as you can, you can accomplish anything you want.
2. Miracle. What I like about Miracle is first, how the team bonds through intense workouts and in their time off the ice and second, how the athletes had to learn to trust their coach and his methods and coaching techniques in order to become Olympic Gold Medalists. My favorite quote from Miracle is "The name on the front (of the jersey) is a heck of a lot more important than the name on the back." It just proves that you must always put your team before yourself.

3. Remember the Titans is awesome! I love the way the team overcomes their differences and creates such a tight bond with one another. Team bonding is one of my favorite things about being an athlete, so this movie speaks to me :) I know every line to this movie and I still cry every time i watch it (haha)
4. Coach Carter. Another great movie about overcoming adversity. I love how Coach Carter emphasizes the academic side of being an athlete, because too often, it's only about athletics. It never gets old watching the underdog rise up. What I really love about this movie is that the team doesn't actually win the state title (sorry for the spoiler), but the community still supports the team and they realize how much they've really learned.
5. Hoosiers. This old basketball movie is a classic and was first introduced to me by my parents. I love the legacy in this movie and it inspires me every time I watch it. The part I always think about is when the team makes it to the state championship and they are overwhelmed by the great facilities and huge arena. Their coach makes them measure the height of the rim and the length of the court to prove a basketball court is a basketball court. I think of this every time i step into a big competition...all the equipment is still the same that I've practiced on for years, no matter how big the competition floor feels; nothing is different.
